Musical nationalism refers to the use of musical ideas or motifs that are identified with a specific country, region, or ethnicity. As a musical movement, Nationalism emerged in the mid-19th century in connection with political independence movements which placed an emphasis on national folk songs and folk dances to give people pride in their unique culture. The secondary effects of this endeavor were the development of tourist industries and a strong sense of community.
